Using Statcounter

Add Visitor Labels & Alerts

Never miss an important visitor again. Visitor Labels and Alerts help you stay on top of visitor activity.

Visitor Labels

Visitor Labels enable you to add descriptive information about your visitors to help you track them as they visit, leave, and return to your site. You can use Labels to store notes, business names, customer IDs, and more. You can then filter your reports to only show traffic from an individual labeled visitor.

Add a Label

  1. While logged in to Statcounter, select one of your projects and navigate to any of the following Recent Activity reports: Visitor Activity, Visitor Paths or Page View Activity.
  2. Choose a visitor you'd like to label and click / tap on the Label icon to the right of the IP Address to open the Visitor Label & Alert popup.
  3. In the Label this Visitor field, type the text you'd like to associate with this visitor, then click the Save button.
  4. The label icon will change to a darker blue and your label text will appear in bold to help you identify this visitor in your reports.

You can view and manage all of your Labels by selecting Manage Labels in the Visitor Label & Alert popup or by navigating to Visitor Labels in your project settings. You'll see a full list of all the Labels you've created, and you can update or delete them as you need to.

See our guide on filtering your reports to see how powerful labels can be when combined with filters.

Visitor Alerts

Set alerts to be notified when an individual visitor returns to your website so you never have to miss an important visitor again.

Add an Alert

  1. While adding a Label to a visitor, you also have the option to add an alert and get notified the next time that visitor starts browsing your website. In the Visitor Label & Alert popup, check the box "Create an alert for this Visitor" and click Save.
You can also check the "Alert for all visitors from..." box if you want broader tracking for that visitor based on their ISP. This option could potentially generate a lot of alerts, so use it wisely!
  2. A bell icon will appear next to each visitor that you have set an alert for.
  3. To remove an alert, open the Visitor Label & Alert popup for that visitor, uncheck the alert checkbox and click Save.

Alert Notifications

When a visitor you have set an alert for returns to your website, you'll receive a notification in Statcounter. The alert bell icon in the header of your project pages will show the number of new alerts in the red circle. Click the alert bell icon to open a dropdown list of all your alerts.

As new alerts are created, you will automatically receive an email notification. If you have installed the Statcounter app on any of your mobile devices, you'll receive a push notification.

See our guide Install the Mobile App and stay connected with your stats.

Manage Alert Notifications

To manage your alert notifications, select Your Alerts from the user dropdown menu in the header. The Your Alerts page lets you switch on / off alerts for email or individual mobile devices.

I have an alert notification though I am unable to access it to read or view, I am becoming more frustrated and angry now.

all this mentions labels, I am unclear of what that description refers to, however I don't see the Country stats anymore, they were all there before, also as mentioned by others with similar issues all their stats have dissapeared, so have mane, unrecoverable allegedly and not even showing in the subscription model now enforced as I have had reported to me. all this since we have been a loyal station since 2002.
Being able to see which countries were viewing our website was one reason we opted to use Statcounter as we are streaming to a global audience with a specific genre of related music. I am extremely dissapointed at this denial of service and would be prepared to pay something to help out, though not at the fees listed. so much for Loyalty, its not recognised anymore it would seem, just gouging tactics.

Hi. Country, State / Region and City / Town stats are located in the Reports section - link in the left navigation in your project.

Location details are also available for each visitor in Recent Activity > Visitor Activity and Visitor Paths.

Labels and Alerts are upgraded features.

Stay counter became more or less unavailable for years so far as progress.
    I lost interest.
But now since it was deleted from my template I added it in but it’s not where I want it.
Could you display a link to directions or tell me where they are because I’m not finding them. Thank you
I’m not doing this for business. I post colorful photos because the world need more color.
It would be good to know who is seeing my blog since some people are antagonistic in various ways.
But there is no way to see them therefore 2nd step, block them.

    Thanks

VERY upset at this change. I can understand if we'd need to get premium to add NEW labels, but the pre-existing labels should not have been removed. Especially with no easy way to download or otherwise archive that information. Ironically, whereas I WOULD have upgraded in order to be able to add new labels, I will absolutely not be giving you a cent because of this move.

Hi, as mentioned in the comment, if you don't wish to upgrade and you'd like to download your visitor label data, you can contact support to facilitate this.

Visitor Labels changed from being a free feature to a Premium feature in Statcounter in March 2018. We made this change to help cover the costs of running Statcounter. As valued long term members of Statcounter, we continued to provide visitor labels to you for free.

However, from 1st March 2022, visitor labels are only available on the Premium plan for all members, as detailed in a message displayed in Statcounter over the previous 6 months.

We would really appreciate it if you could help support Statcounter by upgrading your account. By doing so, you get to keep your existing labels and enjoy all the benefits of the Premium plan. If you don't wish to upgrade and you'd like to download your visitor label data, you can contact support to facilitate this.

Thanks for the response, but this is the first that I'm hearing about either one of those changes. Where was this notification exactly? Drastic changes like this, should really go out by email or something. I totally get needing more support, a lot of us are hurting for money these days, but doing it this way is really off-putting. I've been fine with the free features as is, I don't need more, so paying over $100 a year, just so I have Labels back, is pretty extreme. I don't even pay anywhere near that much for my hosting!

Thanks for your feedback. Here is the message that was displayed between September 16th 2001 and March 1st 2022 for all Statcounter members on the free plan who had active visitor labels. It was displayed on Visitor Activity, Page View Activity and Visitor Paths.

The Premium plan is available for $89 per year per project and includes:

        100,000 page views
        Landing Page Analysis
        Conversion Tracking
        Paid Traffic Analysis
        Visitor Labels
        Visitor Alerts
        Live Update
        Export Reports as CSV
        Detailed Email Reports
        Priority Support via Live Chat

Ah I see, thanks for the screenshot. I prefer to use the old sidebar option, which has the Recent Visitor Activity page instead. I use it daily with the labels filter, etc, so maybe the notice wasn't showing up on that version. Oh yeah, per project is the other killer, so $356 per year on 4 of my projects, just to have my Labels back, ouch! Vaya con Dios, little labels.

I did not receive this notification either, its seems to have been buried withing statcounter's own pages rather than emailing it to those registered.

apparemment c'est devenu payant, et tout l'existant a disparu ! un gros scandale, à mon avis.

Hey ! Where did all my labels go? I have been carefully putting them in for years!
  • Posted on Mar 4 2022 at 12:10 by teslaman
Welp, there went all my years of using labels down the drain.
    • Posted on Jan 26 2023 at 01:12 by teslaman
I've been meaning to say thanks for bringing the labels back, but now they're gone again. Guess it wasn't intentional, heh.

How is this useful with only an ISP? I would need the name and contact info of a visitor to make use of this info, and I assume that is not available, correct?
    • Posted on Oct 20 2020 at 12:54 by jonathanmorton
It depends on the type of website / business. Some Statcounter members can recognize individual customers from their location, time of visit, pages viewed, etc. It might be from a sales lead or inquiry they have dealt with. Having just a few pieces of information can help them find the visit in Statcounter so they can label that visitor and set an alert.

You are correct, name and contact info are not available. However, where the host ISP is a business, often the name of the business is the host name, which can serve some use cases.

I would be happy with just a town or country , though I get nothing now.
